FEATURES

X2 BMS Pro -12 is an advanced Battery Management System for 12 V lithium Cell Packs. The innovative design makes it the most tailored BMS available for yachts or other applications with high demands on a safe and reliable battery system.
The BMS has eleven outputs that can manage different types of relays and control any type of charger. It can also manage any alternator with internal or external regulator. Remote control of external regulator with adapted AFP output. Temperature monitoring of alternator with alarm and control of external cooling.

  • X2 TechTM algorithm will control a relay between the lithium and the lead-acid battery.
    • The system is specifically engineered to have a lead-acid battery as Backup and/or Starter and/or Bow battery.
    • X2 TechTM was introduced 2020. The unique feature provides several benefits to the system.
  • Backup integrated by optional relay
    • X2-Pro is the only BMS available where a backup relay can be integrated into the system and will alert by flashing LED when the system is bypassed (as a reminder).
    • The system can utilize the starter battery as backup, where any charger in the system can supply power to achieve durability.
    • The chargers will be able to supply power to the backup – at any time. This includes remote controlled chargers when the BMS is forced OFF (no power) or if any system failure.
  • ON and OFF controls
    • Located in different places for safety reasons.
    • The original battery switch can be used as a “Master” battery switch that will power off the BMS. The start button is located at the Control panel for easy access.
  • In-built pre-charge feature
    • Eliminates high in-rush current that otherwise will damage the contactor (load relay) when the system is powered on.
    • The market’s most efficient system for eliminating inrush current from 12 V lithium batteries. The power resistor of 4 Ohm makes the pre-charge four times more powerful compared to other systems with 15 Ohm resistor.
    • The powerful resistor allows a certain amount of parasitic current which is common for 12 V systems. If the pre-charge fail due to high parasitic current to consumers, the system will alert and the start up can be aborted.
    • The system handles pre-charge for both the load relay and the charge relay. Pre-charge also works in the event of LVP when the load relay is re-connected.
  • Dedicated outputs for bi-stable relay
    • Easy and safe connection.
    • Zero power consumption after activation.
    • Makes the system energy efficient and cost effective in comparison to other systems that have 140 mW micro relay controls the output and requires a drive unit that has continuous standby power.
  • Alternator Field Pre-disconnect (AFP)
    • The AFP will safely disconnect charging before the charge relay opens – at any time.
    • Will pre-disconnect the alternator (or other charger) before charge relay opens. Compatible with any alternator regulators (like Balmar, Wakespeed, Alpha Pro).
    • The dedicated AFP output operates for all five conditions that can trigger the charge relay to open (embedded in the algorithms controlling charging).
  • Dual Low Voltage Protection
    • X2 BMS Pro has the safest Low Voltage Protection available.
After the event of LVP, the battery has a unique safe protection and can withstand no recharging for several months or even longer periods.
    • Protection on two levels, where the first (LVP-1) is at about 8% State of Charge. An algorithm will filtering out temporary voltage drop that will not trigger LVP-1 in case of high amps discharge.
    • Will isolate the lithium battery and disconnect both load and charge relay including the BMS. The standby current from the system is zero after the event of LVP.
  • Pre-alarm system – requires the BMS Control (optional)
    • Maximum utilization of true capacity.
    • The pre-warning system makes it possible to safely use 92% of the battery’s true capacity, without risking unexpected blackout.
    • Provide a unique feature to calibrate the Battery Monitor’s capacity setting and improve SoC estimate to match true capacity.
  • Charge Management System
    • CMS is an optimized algorithm that regulates charging and disconnects when the battery is full and then reconnects charging when required. The benefit is that the lithium battery will not be float nor absorb charged.
    • CMS is embedded for three dedicated outputs that both regulate charging (CMS) and protect (CP) in case of high cell voltage or temperature. These outputs provide options for any type of charger to be compatible with CMS. They can either be controlled by the charge relay or via remote. CAN is also an alternative to remote control, but does not provide the same safety for the system, as it requires the BMS and GX device to be powered.
    • There are also three alternative charge outputs for remote control of Charge Protection (CP). These can also be integrated with the Victron BMV712 and then have customized charge regulation based on the state of charge (SoC) and voltage plus timer (described in the Installation Guide).
  • Intelligent Dynamic cell balancing Algorithm, IDATM
    • X2 BMS pro manage balancing of  large cells.
    • The unique IDATM will manage the initial balancing without absorption voltage.
  • Manage control of Alternator(s)
    • Input of two alternator temperature sensors.
    • Outputs to control two in-line blowers for external cooling.
    • Alerts in the event of hot alternator (two levels).
    • Alternator Field Pre-disconnect output (AFP).
  • Wide range of support for all different chargers
    • With or without remote, and without lithium profile – thanks to different outputs including the charge relay with the embedded CMS that disconnects when the battery is full and never float charges.
    • Any type of charger is supported by the ability to control according to X2’s charge management (CMS).
    • Any charger can also charge the lead-acid battery when the BMS is switched off during winter storage. Optional connection is also supported and can be easily adapted with remote control if desired.
  • Compatible  with different brands
    • Compatible with Victron Multi/Quattro and Mastervolt CombiMaster among others.
    • Compatible with any external alternator regulators (Balmar, Wakespeed, Alpha pro and others).
    • Compatible with all Wind / Hydro generators that require a battery to always be connected – due to provide power to the regulator.

MONITORING

The front panel is made of hard anodised aluminum and comes with black stainless (A4) screws that fit into countersunk holes. Easy connection with CAT5 ethernet cables (Pro version).

The video illustrates bright LEDs that are clearly visible, at the second level of pre-alarm due to triggered Low Voltage Protection. The final alert includes two minutes high yielding buzzers (2x 92 dB).

Both the BMS Control and the external battery monitor are required in order to receive accurate control and maximize utilization of the lithium battery.

X2 BMS’ Cell data can be monitored via a PC/Mac, as an option via interface. Read more about monitoring Cell Data:

BMS Control

The control panel is not mandatory for operation of X2 BMS Pro, but highly recommended to provide accurate control and utilisation of the battery’s capacity.

The BMS Control makes it safe to utilise much more of the battery’s capacity. With reliable LED indication, 92% of true capacity can be utilized without risking blackout due to unexpected shut down.

The BMS Control panel has LEDs as status and alerts. The panel is equipped with dual buzzers with opening in the front (2x 92 dB).

The Pre-Alarm always alerts before the battery is interrupted due to Low cell Voltage Protection or high temperature. The pre-alarm will also alert before High cell Voltage Protection (HVP), Charge temperature, Hot alternator and Cell Error.

When the battery has low state of charge (Low Battery), the BMS Control will alert three-level pre-alarm with LEDs and Buzzer before shut down due to Low Voltage Protection (=blackout). The third and final pre-alarm includes two minutes high-yielding dual buzzers.

The alerts are triggered by the true voltage of the lowest cell, instead of an estimated SoC for the battery.

External Battery Monitor

SoC (%) monitoring is not built-in to the X2 BMS, since an external Battery Monitor is more convenient and accurate. Victron and other brands offers different Battery Monitors and they also measure starter/aux battery voltage among other features for Battery Monitor’s.

Estimated SoC via shunt has measurement errors that typically accumulate during cycling, when the lithium battery is not fully charged. In addition, the battery’s true capacity can deviate from the nominal Amp-hours by up to 27%. It is therefore a great advantage to calibrate and specify the true capacity settings (Ah) based on the X2 BMS Control LED indications. The outcome is that more of the battery’s true capacity can be utilized safely. In some cases, the BMS Control allows as much as 50% higher utilization of the capacity versus only SoC based measurement.

COST BENEFITS

Considerable cost savings are possible due to X2 Pro having several built-in features. The battery system does not require additional devices as per the below.

Isolator or DC/DC not required – X2’s Charge relay will isolate lithium battery from Aux battery. Cost approx € 120 ex VAT.

DC/DC not required to limit alternator charging – X2-Pro is able to control cooling of the alternator(s). Cost approx € 250 ex VAT.

GX-device not required, but is required for all CAN communication – X2-Pro has CAN, however, also able to control all chargers by six different dedicated digital outputs in a more efficient way that will not require GX device. Cost approx € 360 ex VAT.

3.6 V charger not requiredX2’s unique IDA balancing will make the initial balancing with the ordinary 12 V charger and without prolonged absorp voltage. Cost € 50 – 300 ex VAT for a 3.6 V charger.

Pre-charge devices are not required – X2 BMS Pro has a very powerful pre-charge feature built in. The pre-charge for the X2 system works for both Load and Charge relay. For other systems, two pre-charge devices are required to protect both the Load and Charge relay. Cost approx € 220 for 2 pcs ex VAT.

Driver to control bi-stable relays not required – X2 has dedicated outputs for bi-stable load relay. X2’s charge relay will disconnect when no charger is detected (ie. no coil power) Cost approx € 55 ex VAT per relay.

BMS-shunt not required – X2 BMS has input to sense charging and is also adopted to have external Battery Monitoring (which most boats already have installed). Cost approx € 38 ex VAT

Replacing old chargers due to lack of lithium profile or remote control is not necessary:
X2 BMS has in-built Charge Management System that shuts off charging to the lithium battery when battery is full, and therefore will never absorb nor float charge the lithium battery. CMS can operate all chargers, both via remote or via charge relay. A very cost efficient – value for money – charger is Victron IP22 (all advanced settings via Bluetooth). This charger fits well in a X2 system, controlled via charge relay.
The Charge relay algorithm is optimised to control charging and includes protection. In the event of protection (temperature or HVP), the charge current can still be high and therefore will the Control Panel alert a Pre-Alarm before charge relay will disconnect.
Avoiding float / absorp charging extends the life of the lithium battery. The CMS algorithm has been developed since 2017 when it was introduced. Cost approx. € 300 – 900 ex VAT

Total cost savings approximately € 600 – 1700
